Enhancing Global Collaborative Research: ORCHESTRA at EUGLOHRIA
In interviews of the European University Alliance for Global Health – Transformation through Joint Research and Innovation Action (EUGLOHRIA), a network project funded by the European Commission focusing on education and training in Global Health at European level, ORCHESTRA cohorts was introduced by two contributing members of ORCHESTRA: Dr. Noemi Castelletti, Mathematical Modeler / Statistician at the Division of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at LMU Klinikum in Munich, and Dr. Ana Lucia Mayen-Chacon, Postdoc at Université Paris-Saclay.
Dr. Ana Lucia Mayen-Chacon highlights the relevance of ORCHESTRA in context of formulating evidence-based recommendations to effectively prevent, protect, and optimize the treatment of COVID-19 patients, including those experiencing long-term consequences. “We think its valuable to have such resources available in connection with other countries and institutions. In epidemiology, one of the challenges is to pull data together. (…) Having such connections could give access to a larger amount of data for international results and also for the mobility of students or researchers that can come and have access to this data.”
Dr. Noemi Castelletti introduced the ORCHESTRA projects “KoCo19”, a prospective representative cohort study in Munich in which she played a pivotal role and “KoCo-Impf”, which focused on vaccination among healthcare workers. “What ORCHESTRA managed was to put people together doing the same things and to share data and insights (…) and this is similar to what EUGLOHRIA is also trying to do”. She underscores the importance of research in fostering connections among people beyond the scientific level: “Alliances can help all the research groups to have the connections (…). You need a network, which is supporting you for the next years and I think these alliances are very important for that”.
The European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH) is a strategic partnership funded by the European Commission’s European Universities Initiative. It aims to tackle public health challenges by leveraging expertise in biomedicine, life sciences, and social sciences. EUGLOHRIA expands its educational focus by integrating research and innovation to enhance collaboration within the alliance. Through Horizon 2020 funding, EUGLOHRIA seeks to drive institutional transformation and develop a shared research agenda in Global Health.
