The University Hospital of Cologne (UHC) is a 1,500-beds tertiary care teaching hospital with around 63,000 in- and 312,000 outpatients per year. UHC provides a special Infectious Diseases (ID) unit as well as a well-implemented ID consultation programme founded by the group leader Janne Vehreschild with currently more than 2,400 consultations per year. Janne Vehreschild’s research group “Cohorts in Infection Research” leads epidemiological and clinical studies with a methodological focus in platform and network building, data collection, biobanking, and comprehensive statistical/epidemiological analysis. The team has 30 members plus 11 doctoral students and consists of health economists, software developers, bioinformaticians, documentation specialists, public health specialists, medical engineers, and physician scientists. Additional expertise is gained by broadly implemented cooperations with distinct research groups at UHC and at other national and international study sites.
