EU-US Conference on long COVID: Exploring new insights and strategies for long COVID

EU-US Conference on long COVID: Exploring new insights and strategies for long COVID

The European Commission, DG Health and Food Safety, hosted an online conference with over 800 participants to highlight the latest news and developments on long COVID in the EU and the US. Health experts, researchers, as well as representatives of patient organizations and policymakers from around the world exchanged their insights and knowledge to better understand and manage the condition and to identify key challenges and knowledge gaps. The insights and collaborations fostered during this conference, which was held on 13 December 2022, continue to hold exceptional value. As one of the speakers for current research evidence, Evelina Tacconelli, leader and coordinator of ORCHESTRA, shared valuable insights from the ORCHESTRA project. Recent research findings Evelina shared were: 💡 There are more than 60 documented symptoms of long COVID, and women are at a threefold higher risk of developing the condition than men. 💡 People who were not hospitalized with COVID-19 can still develop long COVID, regardless of the severity of their initial infection. 💡 The incidence and prevalence of long COVID have been impacted by the introduction of vaccines, with vaccinated individuals having a reduced risk of long COVID and death compared to unvaccinated individuals. 💡 The risk of long COVID varies depending on the circulating variant of the virus. 💡 There is a high level of stigma associated with long COVID. In clonclusion, she highlighted the need for greater public awareness and support for patients with Long COVID, with a need of a consensus on the definition of Long COVID not only including symptoms as the only factor in the definition and the need for more research on vulnerable populations. International collaboration, she argued, remains crucial for addressing this persistent and complex condition. Orchestra comes to a close with a final meeting in Verona’s beautiful Palazzo Giusti

The Orchestra Project - Connecting European Cohorts to Increase Common and Effective Response to the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic - is successfully concluding with its final partner meeting taking place today at the beautiful Palazzo Giusti in Verona, on 7 and 8 October. The final meeting provides an opportunity for project participants to reflect on their achievements, discuss key findings, and explore the impact of the project on ongoing pandemic response efforts. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the collaborative spirit and scientific achievements that have made this project a success. Coordinated by the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University of Verona, the project brings together scientists from 37 partner institutions in 14 countries. Over the course of four years, this remarkable collaboration has generated vital data to support the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing key insights into the virus and shaping public health responses across Europe. The shared knowledge and scientific achievements will leave a lasting legacy and continue to influence future global health strategies and pandemic preparedness. ORCHESTRA has provided key insights into the virus, shaping public health responses across Europe. This shared knowledge and scientific work will leave a lasting legacy, influencing future global health strategies and pandemic preparedness. Thank you to all the valuable contributions of all project participants!

New Study on COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine Response of People Living with HIV

New Study on COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine Response of People Living with HIV

CD4 cell counts remain the most solid marker to guide vaccination campaigns in PLWH.  Considering the higher risk of worse outcomes after infection, PLWH with more severe immunosuppression should be always prioritized for vaccination – and booster – campaigns. The 3rd booster dose proved to be essential to overcome waning of humoral response and to push this response back to a level associated with protection from infection.
